What a weekend!!! Levi and Elissa Grimes had Gunner looking sharp. Friday started out with the consignment auction team roping (150 teams). Levi won this roping heading on Gunner with a total time on 3 head of 21 seconds +. They followed this performance with a nice free style and one of the best cutting demonstrations given that morning. The calf roping run was phenominal. Gunner brought the calf back to him at least 5 feet and stood at attention from the time the calf hit the ground until Levi mounted and rode forward. Gunner had the whole place buzzing. We spoke to a ton of folks.......so many in fact that I almost didn't have time to converse with visiting youth rodeo queen, Lacey Westphal, and Jackson Grimes, Levi's son, who each rode Gunner as Levi helped Lisa Kittel, his assistant, through her ranch horse competion exhibition. If Jackon and Lacey are representative of the next generation, the future is bright. I would be remiss if I did not mention that Lisa designed Levi's website, www.dakotaperformancehorses.com, and the posters that were located throughout the civic arena and event center. Lisa Kittel Design is an up and comer in the design world!
Gunner was lot 21 in the sale. I have no idea how the first 20 horses sold. We spent the entire time visiting with individuals about Gunner. There were roughly 1,000 people packed in to watch the sale. It was loud, probably much louder than it needed to be. The ring was soft and very deep. I had told the auctioneer to start him low and let them bid. Levi put Gunner threw his paces amist a flurry of wildly raised arms and yells. He never missed a beat and then just stood calmly in the middle of the ring until the final gavel fell at $21,500.
Gunner has always been an awesome horse. Yes, he was started right, had the breeding, disposition and basic training to show well. However, what Levi was able to do with him in just over 3 months was simply amazing. Thanks Levi (and crew) for a job well done!!!!!!!
